Resilience

The third and last fundamental concept we need to discuss is that of Resilience.  Some people think of this as persistence, although that is incorrect in our context.  Resilience is the ability to continue through adversity or other resisience with the untimate objective firmly in mind.  Those who have high levels of resilience succeed at obtaining the happiest and most fulfilling lives.  Some notable examples of people with resilience are:

  • Winston Churchill who urged his countrymen to :..."never, never, never, ever give up..." during speeches given as World War 2 arial bombs dropped by the Nazi's of The Third Reich threatened his country's existence, is the true attribute that separates the winners from those less fortunate.

Some more examples would be:

  •  Ronald Reagen who was elected President of the United States when he was well past a normal retirement age.  At 70 something he was a vigorous fellow who kept his own counsel.  He listened intently to all sides of an argument then decided a course of action.  If it was less than popular to some of his citizens, or some other country, he defended the decision by explaining his reasoning for the decision. His core beliefs led to this strength of character that resulted in his perserverance.
  • Abraham Lincoln was of similar background.  Many business and political failures would have defeated most others.  But "Honest Abe" felt compelled to serve as President so he kept trying.  History records his successes and failures once elected.  His assination indicates that some of his decisions were strongly disagreed with by some people.
  • Likewise the character trait of persistence that leads to a Maximized Life can result in the assinations of strong Leaders like President John F. Kennedy and The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King.
